چکیده

Chapter 1: Introduction: A Hidden World of Nonformal Expert Reasoning This chapter motivates the study of nonformal methods experts use during the process of creative theory formation rather than those they display in polished articles after the fact, and describes the method of video taped think aloud protocols used in this study. The tapes capture scientists in the act of: mentally performing imaginative spatial transformations such as deforming, cutting, and reassembling objects in novel ways; and generating creative analogies, extreme cases, explanatory models and thought experiments; and the book aims to document the fact that such methods are actually used in scientific thinking.

Computational Mental Imagery, and Visual Mechanisms for Maintaining a Goal-Subgoal Hierarchy

Mental imagery is one important and powerful mechanism of human cognition that has been little explored in AI research. I present a computational framework for mental imagery which specifies the representational and inferential primitives needed to form an imagery-based reasoning system. I then present a computational model of mental imagery that uses a novel recursive memory structure that I c...

Analogy and Gesture for Mental Visualization of DNA Structure

In this chapter, we report five beginning undergraduate students' understanding of the 3-D structure of DNA, and the use of gesture and analogy to enhance their 3-D visualization of DNA structure. Through clinical interview-cum-teaching sessions we first recapitulated their background knowledge of basic biology and chemistry prerequisites. We then proceeded to a microgenetic study of the studen...

Comparison of The Effectiveness of 5E Model and Ganiye Educational Model on Critical Thinking and Creative Thinking of Students

Introduction: Educational Bybee and Ganiye educational model are among the teaching methods that seem to play a role in strengthening this category of thinking skills; therefore, the present study was conducted to comparethe effectiveness of the educational model Bybee and Ganiye educational model on critical thinking and creative thinking of second-year female students. Methods: The statistica...

Documenting the use of expert scientific reasoning processes by high school physics students

We describe a methodology for identifying evidence for the use of three types of scientific reasoning. In two case studies of high school physics classes, we used this methodology to identify multiple instances of students using analogies, extreme cases, and Gedanken experiments. Previous case studies of expert scientists have indicated that these processes can be central during scientific mode...

Simulation study of Hemodynamic in Bifurcations for Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformation using Electrical Analogy

Background and Objective: Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformation (CAVM) hemodynamic is disease condition, results changes in the flow and pressure level in cerebral blood vessels. Measuring flow and pressure without catheter intervention along the vessel is big challenge due to vessel bifurcations/complex bifurcations in Arteriovenous Malformation patients. The vessel geometry in CAVM patients are...
